Meet The Doctor
Dr. Stephanie Geter
I’m a licensed clinical psychologist. I’ve always loved to help others. I’ve been told I was “a psychologist before I got my degree” because I did things like help my peers repair their relationships with their friends in elementary school. I knew I wanted to be a psychologist after taking a psychology class in high school and volunteering at 2 elementary schools. Though the schools were from opposite cultural and socioeconomic perspectives, the needs and wants of the youth were the same; so was their response when those needs weren’t met, regardless of the circumstances. That further fueled my curiosity about how we functioned as people as well as my interest in diversity.
After high school, I majored in psychology at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. I went on to get my Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology from Nova Southeastern University. My training in graduate school led me to an integrated therapeutic approach that includes Cognitive Behavioral, Psychodynamic, Interpersonal and Relational therapies that can be tailored to best meet the needs of each unique client. I’ve recognized the value of a collaborative and interactive therapy experience and strive to create one in my sessions. While my training informed my approach, my experiences led me to an interest in multicultural counseling and family therapy. Humans are relational. Since we do not grow and develop by ourselves it is often essential to have those that are important in your life not only assist in your growth but grow and develop with you to reach the maximum potential as an individual and a unit. Recognizing the significance and differences of diverse cultural backgrounds, I know that it is imperative to incorporate cultural and family values into the therapeutic process.
My clinical training and experiences provided a strong foundation for my pre-doctoral internship at St. Mary’s Children and Family Services, a residential treatment setting in Long Island, New York and my post-doctoral fellowship at St. Mary’s (now mercyFirst) and the Minuchin Center for the Family in Manhattan. After relocating to Rochester, NY in 2007 I worked as a Psychologist and eventually Program Manager in another residential setting. These opportunities highlighted the impact of trauma on children and families as well as adults. As a result, I offer a trauma-sensitive environment and have been trained in trauma-informed models including Trauma-Informed Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
I’ve received advanced training in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), an approach that helps individuals cope with impulsive behaviors, self-harm, and intense emotional instability. Additionally, I have trained in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), an evidenced-based psychotherapy treatment used to treat PTSD and trauma as well as anxiety, grief, and other challenges facing both youth and adults.
I have been working with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families for over 20 years.
